One day I began having an onset of foot and leg cramps so bad and so excruciatingly painful that I knew I could not go on living if this persisted. During my research I found that many people do end their life resulting from this living Hell. I felt that was so tragic because I discovered that there is something you can do about it, so I decided to write this blog to help as many people as I can.
I discovered what was triggering the cramps and how to stop or prevent them. The trigger is caffeine and or alcohol equaling dehydration. Water alone isn't necessarily the cure. The cure is to consume electrolytic minerals with the water. Sports drinks contain some basics like sugar and salt and didn't help in my case. Salt is a mineral and in small amounts is essential with water. Sugar and water helps to rehydrate directly into the intestines. In my case if I get cramps I take a Magnesium and Potassium vitamin supplement (Which are also electrolytes), I break the tablet in my mouth to speed absorption then I drink down a large glass of water followed soon after with one or two more glasses of water. Within five to ten minutes all cramping goes away and I feel normal again.
Medications can cause many problems in the body along with depleting the body of minerals, electrolytes and vitamins in the body, so supplementing can be essential. I didn't mention adding Calcium because Calcium causes muscle contraction (antacids are calcium), Magnesium causes muscles to relax. Any normal person can benefit from a Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium supplement in properly a balanced formulation, but if you take a calcium supplement all by itself or antacids then it causes a serious imbalance and cramping could be a result. Another thing that causes imbalances are herbal detoxification programs, they have their benefit but may flush out minerals along with built up toxins, lot's of water intake is essential with detoxification programs and I learned that adding electrolytic minerals is also essential.
On a further note: Poor blood circulation is one cause of foot cramps. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor. Alcohol in very low dosage is a vasodilator but in high dosage a vasoconstrictor. If you are dehydrated your blood vessels can be constricted. Too much of this constriction will eventually cause the type of stroke where blood supply is cut off from the brain. It pays to study which herbs or substances are vosodilators and which ones are vosoconstrictors.
